‘Gas tariff hike to push low income households into a poverty trap’

Islamabad: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Saturday announced a 45% increase in the prices of natural gas for the 2022-23 fiscal year.

The traffic was increased to meet revenue requirements of the two gas utilities, SNGPL and SSGCL.

The decision comes a day after the government increased diesel and petrol prices by Rs30 per litre.

The petroleum prices has seen a hike of Rs60 per litre in 15 days.

Commenting on the OGRA’s decision, former minister Haroon Sharif said, “Why couldn’t they manage a gradual increase, combined with savings from expenditure cuts and selling off loss making assets? The current inflationary pressures is going to push low income households in to a poverty trap.”
