Hassan Askari, son of Maj Gen (retd) Zafar Mehdi, released
Islamabad: Hassan Askari, the civilian son of a retired Major General, Syed Zafar Mehdi Askari, has safely returned home.
On October 2, 2020 he was arrested for penning critical letters to the military leadership during the then army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa’s tenure.
October 2021, he was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by a military court.
Anchor Kamran Shahid said that Hassan’s father had filed a mercy plea with the Military Court of Appeal.
The journalist said the Hassan’s sentence was reduced on humanitarian basis keeping in view the old age of his parents.
In March this year, Major General (retd) Syed Zafar Mehdi Askari broke his silence on the arrest of his civilian son Hassan Askari for writing letters to military officers over then army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s controversial policies.
The former military officer appeared before the media along with his family at the Islamabad Press Club, two years after his son was arrested and sentenced by a military court.
