Pakistan oil and gas discovery: TV channels raise hopes with incorrect reporting

ISLAMABAD: Some private television channels gave rise to speculations after Prime Minister Imran Khan said he would soon share a good news with regard to oil and gas exploration in the country.

While Prime Minister Imran Khan requested the nation to pray that his expectations from the offshore drilling come true, some private television channels ran breaking news that Pakistan has discovered the oil and gas reserves off Karachi.

People have been sharing the incorrect TV reports on social media platforms since then.

A report published in leading Urdu language Daily Jang on Tuesday said the prime minister’s “good news” may be about the recovery of oil and reserves as big as Sui Gas filed, Pakistan’s biggest natural gas field discovered in 1952.

The report said Federal Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Awan was the first to inform the prime minister about the potential of the discovery.

It went on to add that the reserves would be enough for the next 25 to 30 years.

The reports about discovery of oil and gas have raised people’s hopes and expectations amid the ongoing economic crises facing the country.

Pakistan is faced with acute balance of payment crisis ever since Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan assumed office of the Prime Minster.
