In a candid conversation on the U.K. podcast, Happy Mum, Happy Baby, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, shared her feelings about leaving the hospital soon after giving birth to Prince George in 2013. The now-10-year-old George was born on July 22, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, England. Kate revealed that she didn’t want to “hang around” the hospital due to unhappy memories associated with being sick during her severe morning sickness, known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
During the interview, the now-mother-of-three explained that her experience with Hyperemesis Gravidarum made her eager to return home and get back to normality. Kate described the challenging time as making her feel “utterly rotten” and “not the happiest of pregnant people.” This severe form of morning sickness affected her pregnancies with Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, as well.
Despite the trying circumstances, Kate mentioned that Prince George managed to get a good night’s sleep on the hottest day and night, which brought her some relief. However, she felt an urgency to leave the hospital due to the memories of being unwell during her previous stays.
Reflecting on royal tradition, Kate also talked about the slightly terrifying experience of walking the steps of the Lindo Wing with newborn Prince George to greet the public and the press. The moment marked a special event for the couple and their new family, but it also came with mixed emotions and uncertainty as inexperienced parents. Kate and Prince William expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by the public during this momentous occasion.
Despite the fear and anxiety, Kate felt that sharing their joy and appreciation with the public was important. The world witnessed live broadcasts of the new parents with baby George, as they posed for the cameras before heading to their Kensington Palace home.
Throughout the interview, Kate Middleton’s openness shed light on the challenges she faced during early motherhood and how she navigated them with the support of her husband and the public.
