King Charles coronation: What’s The Gold State Coach?
In one break with tradition, Charles and Camilla, the queen consort, will roll out of Buckingham Palace in the horse-drawn gilded black Diamond Jubilee State Coach on the day of the King’s coronation.
It has heat, air conditioning, power windows and a suspension system that will provide a comfier ride than his mother’s accommodations for her enthronement.
The Gold State Coach was commissioned in 1760 and was first used by King George III to travel to the State Opening of Parliament in 1762. It has been used at every Coronation since that of William IV in 1831.
