Why Asim Munir’s appointment as army chief may become a nightmare for govt?

Rawalpindi: PTI opponents are hoping that Lt. General Asim Munir would become the next Chief of Army Staff after it was reported that the summary sent to the prime minister includes his name.

The reason PML-N supporters wants him to be the next chief is that Asim Munir was removed as the DG ISI by former prime minister Imran Khan after he had informed the PTI chairman about the alleged involvement of his close aides and family members in corrupt practices.

As Imran Khan’s opponents celebrate inclusion of Asim Munir’s name in the GHQ summary, a political commentator, who is also seen as an expert on the military affairs, has said that the Lt. General’s rise to the power may become a headache for the PML-N and its allies.

According to the expert, Lt. General Asim Munir is not popular among the top commanders of the army since he did not come from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul.

The expert said Asim Munir is considered a religious man who does not socialize much.

He said if the officer’s past is anything to go by, he comes across as an upright man who would not do the dirty work for politicians.

The expert said that the Pakistani politicians have developed a habit of seeking the army’s help in economic, judicial and political issues.

“If such an officer becomes the army chief, they(politicians) will have to shoulder all the burden,” he said.

“He will not help you get money from Dubai, China and Saudi Arabia. He won’t pressure the government allies during budgets and no-confidence motion,” said the expert whose name could be disclosed here.
