Tahir Ashrafi says Taqi Usmani is not Mufti-e-Azam of Pakistan

Islamabad: Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Middle and Religious Affairs on Sunday said he has verbally abused by the followers and supporters of Mufti Taqi Usmani for disagreeing with the top Deobandi cleric on his views about Saudi Arabia.

Ashrafi said he was approached by some Arab media outlets for comments on Usmani’s recent remarks in which he had criticized the Saudi government for introducing informs which, according to him, are against Islamic traditions.

TahirAshrafi said he was asked whether Pakistan’s Mufti Azam had issued a decree against the Saudi government. The prime minister’s Special Assistant said he informed the media that there was no official portfolio of Mufti-e-Azam (top cleric) in Pakistan.

Ashrafi said he and his religious party do not agree with Usmani’s views regarding Saudi Arabia and believe that the Kingdom is the only country in the world where Islamic laws are implemented like nowhere else.

He said due to his clarification, he was verbally abused on social media by the supporters of Mufti Taqi Usmani.
