Babcock University students’ viral video sparks debate over punishment

The administration of University of Babcock in Nigeria recently expelled a female student over a sex tape leaked online, sparking a debate in the country on whether the punishment was justified.

In the viral sex video, a female student of Babcock University was seen having sexual intercourse with a man believed to be her lover.

Many social media users and intellectuals have called out the university for handing the female student the harshest punishment for something which didn’t even take place inside the campus.

Others called for the authorities to take action against people involved in posting what they said “revenge porn”.

The university conceded that the sexual act did not occurred on its premises but it justified the punishment insisting that that the punishment was a demonstration of its commitment to its highest moral standards for quality education, character building, learning and service to humanity. 

The university has also faced strong backlash from common people on Twitter.

A week after the Babcock University episode, another scandal involving Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) surfaced on the Internet which also saw multiple students being expelled .

The alleged viral video of six expelled FUTA students purport to show them physically assaulting a female student of the university.

The latest incident also took place outside the campus.
