Ushna Shah criticized for using Marie-Antoinette quote in Instagram caption

Pakistani actress Ushna Shah seems to have irked some people with a caption that accompanied her photos which she posted on Instagram.

Shah, who is apparently vacationing with her husband Hamza Amin in France, shared multiple pictures with caption, “Let ’em eat cake.”

While most of fans seemed to be in awe of her beauty as they commented on her photos, a user found the caption strange.

“What a strange caption…and that too in France where it’s believed Marie Antoinette said this about impoverished peasants. Why use a phrase that has such awful negative connotations about class, violence, and tone-deafness,” wrote Zainab Imam on Twitter.

Marie Antoinette was the last Queen of France before the French Revolution.

“Let them eat cake” is the most famous quote attributed to Marie-Antoinette, the queen of France during the French Revolution. As the story goes, it was the queen’s response upon being told that her starving peasant subjects had no bread. Because cake is more expensive than bread, the anecdote has been cited as an example of Marie-Antoinette’s obliviousness to the conditions and daily lives of ordinary people.
