Eid 2021: Leaked audio call of Ruet Committee member stirs controversy

Karachi: A purported leaked audio call from the press conference of Ruet-e Hilal Committee seems to have made Eid controversial in Pakistan.

Although the central moonsighting body announced it’s decision after reviewing more than two dozen testimonies from Khyber Paktunkhwa, the telephone call raised some eyebrows in the Islamic Republic.

According to Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tahir Ashrafi, the phone call was being made by a member of the committee who happens to be Chairman Abdul Khabir Azad’s friend. The caller has been identified as Mufti Yaseen.

Sources said that a Barelvi cleric submitted his objection to the committee’s decision to announce Eid on Thursday and the final decision announced by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was not unanimous.

Meanwhile, former Ruet Committee chairman Mufti Munib has accepted the committee’s decision to celebrate Eid but has called on the Muslims to fast for another day after Eid to make for the 30th Ramzan.

His announcement was supported by several Barelvi clerics in Karachi.

The committee’s late night decision irked many in Pakistan where majority was convinced that Eid ul Fitr would be celebrated on Friday.
