Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar stirs social media storm after confrontation with Marvi Sarmad

Renowned playwright Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar on Tuesday stirred a storm on social media with his abusive remarks against human rights activist Marvi Sarmad.

The writer of “Mere Paas Tum Ho” and Marvi were part of a panel on a Neo TV show hosted by Ayesha Ehtasham to discuss Aurat March (Women March).

Qamar lost his temper with the female activist when she called him out for opposing what critics of Aurat March think controversial slogans like “Mera Jism Meri Marzi”(My body my rules).

When Marvi Sarmad interrupted the drama writer by chanting the slogan on the show, Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar went on to launch personal attacks against her.

The writer body shamed Marvi Sarmad for challenging his views and interrupting him. Hashtag #KhalilurRehmanQamar was trending top on Twitter after the late night show went on air.

Twitter users were divided over what happened at the private channel between the drama writer and Marvi Sarmad.

While some people totally supported him for giving what they thought a tit-for-tat response to Marvi, others condemned him for using filthy language against a woman.

Many Twitter users also criticized show host Ayesha for failing to stop the panelists from indulging in a fight.

A large number of users called on the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for taking strict action over the incident.
