Maulana Fazl condemns desecration of caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz’s shrine

Islamabad: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday condemned the attack on the shrine of caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz.

In a statement issued on Twitter, Fazl said that the desecration of the shrine of Umar bin Abdul Aziz’s shrine has shattered the hearts and minds of Muslim world.

According to reports, militant groups in Syria have raided the shrine of Ummayyad Caliph Umar Bin Abdul Aziz in Syrian province Idlib last week.

Turkish media reported that the attackers backed by Iran also took away the remains from inside the shrine.

Multiple videos posted by pro-Asad social media pages showed unknown men exhuming the grave in Deir Sharqi, a town near Maarat al-Numan city.

A video showed the grave opened and emptied. Muslims across the world are expressing outrage over the footage circulating on social media, calling for action against the groups involved in the desecration of shrine of Umar bin Abdul Aziz.

Umar bin Abdul Aziz was the eighth Umayyad caliph and his ancestry goes back to Umar bin al-Khattab.
