Nawaz Sharif returns to jail
LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday returned to jail days after Supreme Court dismissed his plea seeking bail extension on health grounds.
The former prime minister would serve a seven-year jail term he was handed down by a court in a corruption reference last year.
TV footage showed a large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers accompany Sharif to Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore as he left his residence.
Senior PMLN leaders including his daughter Maryam Nawaz close aides Khawaja Asif Pervez Rashid, Marrium Aurangzeb and others were part of the caravan that accompanied Nawaz Sharif.
According to Geo News, a police team visited the Sharif residence in Raiwind to take Nawaz Sharif into custody but he refused to surrender and insisted on travelling to jail himself.
Strict security arrangements were made on the route to Kot Lakhpat prison as the PMLN workers took to streets.
