President Arif Alvi may resign

Islamabad: President Arif Alvi may resign amid the ongoing defections in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Speculations regarding his resignation started circulating after PTI Secretary General Asad Umar stepped down from his party position following his release from custody.

According to sources, Arif Alvi is disappointed after being unable to broker a deal between Imran Khan and the military establishment.

It was Alvi who had arranged a couple of meetings between Khan and the then army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa following the PTI chairman’s ouster from office.

Umar was arrested on May 10 along with Shah Mahmood Qureshi and many other senior leader of the party.

Arif Alvi’s term as President of Pakistan is scheduled to end on September 9, 2023, as his tenure lasts for a period of five years.

The rumors started swirling after Fawad Chaudhry parted his ways from Imran Khan, saying he would take a break from politics.

A day before Fawad’s resignation, Dr Shireen Mazari also quit politics after her release from Adiala Jail.

The PTI is at the receiving end of a crackdown after the party supporters vandalized Corps Commander House in Lahore in reaction to Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9.

The PTI had also staged a protest outside the GHQ, an unprecedented move for which the party is facing consequences.

Political commentators say Imran Khan seems to have blown up his own party by overestimating his support within the army.

UK-based YouTuber and fugitive Major (retd) Adil Raja also has a key role in pitting PTI against the army.

According to the PTI’s disgruntled leaders the likes of Adil Raja were the main source of Khan’s information on the army.

Raja is accused of misleading PTI leaders and workers by spreading information which he claims he receives from his sources in the military.
