Islamabad: Maulana Fazlur Rehman has criticized Tableeghi Jamaat scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil for what many see his support for Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In an interview with Saleemi Safi on Geo News, the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief lost his cool when the host said his criticism of the government was not based on merit and it might be driven by his political differences with Imran Khan since he lacked support of religious scholars like Tariq Jamil and Maulana Samiul Haq.
“Perhaps, Imran Khan is the first prime minister of Pakistan whom he (Maulana Tariq Jamil) has openly supported and even released a video in his support,” said Salim Safi.
“Do you have any idea about the backlash Tariq Jamil has faced after that? Do you know how much anger is there in religious circles for Maulana Tariq Jamil,” Maulana Fazlur Rehman responded.
He said although he himself was a big fan and friend of Maulana Tariq Jamil, religious circles were not happy with him for his meetings with Imran Khan.
“Do you have any idea about the JUI’s standing? I am the Ameer (chief) of more than 300,000 Alims,” he said.
