Android Earthquake alerts leave Pakistanis surprised

Thousands of Pakistani android users were left surprised when they received earthquake alerts minutes before it hit their country on Tuesday.

A large number of people took to social media to share screenshots of the android earthquake alerts they received on their phones and asked how would Google know that an earthquake was going to occur.

The reason we received the alerts is because our phones have accelerometers which can be used as seismic detectors.

Google detects an earthquake, estimates it’s path and sends alerts to every phone in it’s path, giving a 15-30 second head start.
