India revokes Kashmir’s special status

New Delhi: India on Monday revoked special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370, stoking fears of more violence in occupied valley.

The measure which immediately comes into effect follows the deployment of thousands of more troops in Occupied territory where internet and phone services have been suspended.

It also revoked Article 35A which allows Kashmiris to define permanent residents of the states.

35A was inserted through the constitution order 1954. It was issued by President Ranjendra Prasad Under article 370 on the advice of Nehru led government.

The Indian move is being seen as an attempt to change demography of the Muslim majority Kashmir.

Home Minister Amit shah said in the parliament that Indian President had signed a decree abolishing Article 370 of the Constitution giving special autonomy to Occupied Kashmir.

Almost all the top Kashmiri leaders have been placed under arrest by Indian authorities amid continuing security crackdown that has killed dozens of people during the last few days.
