LUMS cancels conference on Bangladesh war

Lahore: LUMS on Saturday announced to cancel an online conference to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Bangladesh War of Liberation which its School of Humanities and Social Sciences was to organize in collaboration with the National Institute of Pakistan Studies (NIPS),Quaid-i-Azam University.

According to organizers, the purpose of this conference was to gather academics and non-academic voices on one platform to showcase emerging research and critical approaches that can enhance people’s understanding of the 1971 conflict.

They said the conference was to cover the political history of East Pakistan between 1947-71, the democratic struggle for rights, and the genocidal military operation that resulted in mass displacement and massacres.

Some social media users claimed that the conference was cancelled under pressure from unknown quarters.

Dozens of users criticized the LUMS for holding the conference.
