Mufti Taqi Usmani escapes assassination attempt in Karachi

Karachi: Mufti Usmani narrowly escaped a deadly attack on Friday when gunmen opened fire on his car.

The renowned Islamic scholar remained unhurt in the attack which killed two people and left two others injured.

Police said gunmen on two motorcycles sprayed two cars, one carrying Mufti Usmani, with bullets near Neepa Chowrangi killing Maulana Shahab Khan and security guard Sanobar Khan.

Both the cars belonged to Darul Uloom Korangi, a seminary run by Mufti Taqi Usmani.

Driver of the car that was carrying Usmani is said to be critically injured.

The incident took place in the limits of Aziz Bhatti Police Station.

Four gunmen on two motorcycles sprayed the car with bullets from both sides. The car was registed in the name of Darul Uloom Korangi.

Police said they have launched investigation into attack from every aspect.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of incident asking IG police to submit the report to him.

Mufi Taqi Usmani is a prominent Islamic scholar with tens of thousands of followers in Karachi and elsewhere.

Reports of attack on his car sparked fear among citizens in a city where violence devoured thousands of life during the last decade.
